LONG ISLAND SOUND - U.S. Coast Guard Barque Eagle crewmembers and Coast Guard Academy officer candidates face the beach at Friar's Head near Riverhead, N.Y., during a ceremony aboard the Eagle in Long Island Sound Sept. 16, 2012, to commemorate a battle involving crewmembers from the Revenue Cutter Eagle nearly two centuries ago at the same beach. Crewmembers from the Revenue Cutter Eagle, the third ship to bear the name, fought off a British warship in October of 1814 for two days by intentionally beaching the Eagle at Friar's Head and dragging the ship's cannons to shore.
