NEW YORK - Coast Guard Cutter Half Moon (W-378), center, moored at the former Coast Guard Base at St. George, Staten Island, N.Y., circa 1965. Originally commissioned as a U.S. Navy ship on June 15, 1943, Half Moon was later commissioned by the Coast Guard on Sept. 14, 1948. Half Moon's crew sailed from New York Harbor Apr. 1, 1967, bound for duty in the South China Sea with Coast Guard Squadron Three as one of four original cutters assigned to Operation Market Time. The operation was a naval interdiction of enemy supply lines and gunfire missions supporting allied forces on land.
