NEW YORK - U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Michael Moriarty, the commanding officer of the Coast Guard Reserve Unit at U.S. Southern Command based in Miami, receives a certificate from Vice Adm. Vivien S. Moriarty received his commission in 1978 after graduating from Officer Candidate School in Yorktown, V.A., serving the next 10 years on active duty in various assignments including as a marine inspector with the Marine Inspection Officer, New York, as Assistant Legal Officer for maritime law enforcement with the Seventh Coast Guard District Legal Office in Miami, and as a traveling court-martial defense counsel with the Maintenance and Logistics Command Atlantic. In 1988, Moriarty transitioned from active to reserve duty and served in several reserve assisgnments, including as Deputy Group Commander, Reserve Group Maintenance and Logistics Command Atlantic; Reserve Group Commander, Coast Guard Group Sandy Hook, N.J.; and Emergency Preparedness Liaison Officer with the State Area Command at Fort Dix, N.J.; and was assigned to the Senior Reserve Office at Coast Guard Activities New York.
Moriarty was recalled to active duty status twice following the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center in Manhattan, serving as the executive officer and Acting Deputy Commander at Sector New York, as well as the Alternate Captain of the Port for New York and New Jersey and Acting Commanding Officer of Marine Inspection. He then served as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Crea and Vice Adm. Brian Peterman at Coast Guard Atlantic Area in Portsmouth, Va., and was recalled again to active duty in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
Moriarty earned a Bachelors of Science degree at the University of Dayton, Ohio, a Master of Public Administration degree in Management through New York University and a law degree from Seton Hall University. He is married to the former Karen Horoho of Johnstown, Penn., and has a son and two daughters: Michael, 19, Kerry Ann, 17, and Clare, 14.
