An osprey bird nest nestled atop a Coast Guard Daybeacon, partly obscures the aid to navigation. Aids to navigation help prevent vessel accidents by serving as ?highway signs? on the waterways. Preventing waterway accidents helps save lives, property and protects the environment. Ospreys are water-loving, eagle-like hawks, with a wingspan of four to six feet. Their presence is thought to be an indicator of good water quality. The Coast Guard takes great care to respect the sensitive balance of nature in the maritime environment it?s charged with protecting. Accordingly, Coast Guard policy prohibits removal of active osprey nests from any aid to navigation. When an aid becomes obscured by a nest, the Coast Guard installs temporary aids alongside, to ensure the safety of waterway users and protect the environment.
