LINCOLN, Neb. - Richard Swanson, a World War II veteran, is awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal by Gov. Dave Heineman and Coast Guard Master Chief Petty Officer Deane Smith, officer-in-charge of the Coast Guard Cutter Gasconade Jan. 19, 2010. While serving aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Comanche Feb. 3, 1943, Swanson volunteered to jump into rough, freezing seas to help rescue 93 sailors from the S.S. Dorchester who were unable to climb aboard due to the numbness caused by the freezing conditions. Coast Guard photo
