A Coast Guard petty officer and his K-9 counterpart Asia, a black Labrador, search a tanker for explosives in the Port of Long Beach, Calif. The Coast Guard's Canine Explosive Detection Program started in 2002. There are currently 14 teams of canines and their handlers in the program. Each Maritime Safety and Security Team at the following locations has two teams: Kings Bay, Ga., Galveston, Texas, New York, N.Y, Los Angeles/Long Beach and San Francisco, Calif., and Seattle, Wash.. There are also two teams at the Maritime Security Response Team, a counterterrorism unit in Chesapeake, Va.
