NEW YORK-Scott Koehn, owner of the motor vessel Lt. Michael P. Murphy, is presented the Coast Guard Meritorious Public Service Award by Janet Napolitano, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, and Admiral Thad Allen, Commandant, U.S. Coast Guard at the New York Waterways Terminal, Feb. 18, 2009.Koehn received the award for being one of the first responders on the scene of the US Airways Flight 1549 crash in the Hudson River, Jan. 15, 2009. Koehn piloted the Lt. Michael P. Murphy against the downed aircraft to rescue passengers.The Meritorious Public Service Award is the second highest public recognition that the Commandant of the Coast Guard may award, and recognizes unusual courage in advancing a Coast Guard mission.The Lt. Michael P. Murphy is named after Lt. Michael P. Murphy, a Navy SEAL who was mortally wounded by enemy fire in Asadabad, Afghanistan, on June 28, 2005.
