JUNEAU, Alaska -- Lt. Bill Sportsman and Lt. Jerred Williams fly a Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak C-130 over permafrost above the Arctic Circle enroute to Barrow, Alaska August 7. The C-130 crew flew along the shoreline of the Northern Slope conducting coastal erosion surveys. The Coast Guard has been testing its capabilities of its assets and communications in the harsh environment of the North Slope since October 2007 trying to determine the best way to patrol the increasing waters in the Arctic.
