U.S. Coast Guard Sector Lower Mississippi River celebrated its Change of Command at the Port of Tunica in Tunica, Mississippi on 20 JUN 08. Commander Patrick Maguire (R) relinquished command to Captain Michael Gardiner (L).
Presiding Officer for the event was Rear Admiral Joel R. Whitehead, Commander (C), Eight Coast Guard District, New Orleans, Louisiana. Admiral Whitehead praised Commander Maguire for his outstanding service to Sector Lower Mississippi River. During the ceremony he awarded Commander Maguire the Coast Guard Meritorious Service Medal with Operation Distinguishing Device. The award recognized his many accomplishments including planning and execution of two significant port waterways and coastal security systems, partnerships with associate organizations and his direct involvement in securing 7.7 million dollars from Homeland Security for local ports including the Little Rock Port Authority.
