In 1987, the Japanese government, in cooperation with the United States, placed an 18-foot Peace Monument made of titanium on Attu, Alaska, on a mountaintop about four miles from the Coast Guard Loran Station. It honors all soldiers who died on the Aleutian Islands during World War II. The inscription is in Japanese and English and says:
"In memory of all those who sacrificed their lives in the islands and seas of the North Pacific during World War II and in dedication to world peace. Constructed by the Government of Japan in cooperation with the Government of the United States of America on 1 July 1987."
