The Coast Guard participates in the International Ice Patrol, a multi-national effort to prevent collisions with icebergs in major Atlantic shipping routes. Coast Guard aircraft like this C-130 conduct the primary reconnaissance work. During Ice season on the North Atlantic, daily ice reconnaissance flights cover an expanse of water of 30,000 square miles or more.
