One of Alexander Hamilton's first ten vessels of the "Revenue Marine" about to overhaul a suspected smuggler. The painting suggests that the suspect is one of the smugglers in the habit of unloading valuable cargo into coasters offshore before proceeding through Customs with the less valuable part of her cargo. The "Revenue Marine" or Revenue Cutter Service was founded in 1790 and became part of the U.S. Coast Guard when it was created in 1915.
