Portrait of Coast Guard Art Program Co-founder George Gray. Love of country compelled him to enlist in the Coast Guard during World War II. While serving as a boatswain on the Cutter CAMPBELL, he found inspiration in the day-to-day stories of life at sea, as personified in the ship's mascot, Sinbad. His illustrations enlivened the pages of a book of Sinbad's exploits written by CPO George F, Foley Jr., and Sinbad found nationwide fame.
