Bellingham, Wash. (June 6) -- A Coast Guard SAFEboat is moored at Coast Guard Station Bellingham. The 21-ft. secure all-around flotation -equipped boat features a rigid collar around it that provides additonal flotation, serves as a fender and makes the boat virtually unsinkable. With a 216-horsepower turbodiesel engine, it is capable of speeds exceeding 30 knots, and with an endurance of more than 10 hours. The Coast Guard has had a permanent residence in Bellingham, Wash., since 1947. Today, the units houses two safeboats and 41-ft. utility boats. USCG photo by PA2 Sarah Foster-Snell
