SAN FRANCISCO (Feb. 16, 2006)--Alcatraz Island was originally named "La Isla de los Alcatraces," or island of the pelicans, in the late 1700s. Alcatraz once served as a U.S. Army fort and later a federal penitentiary. It was home to notorious criminals like "Machine Gun Kelly," "The Doc," and the mobster Al Capone. Currently, over one million tourists visit the island to see the former prison cells. Twenty-eight members from Coast Guard Sector San Francisco provided community outreach and volunteered their time to help the National Parks Service clean 75 cells and the kitchen.
