KODIAK, Alaska (Jan. 10, 2006) Coast Guard Petty Officer Doug Hosier, a member of Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Kodiak, checks flares on board the fishing vessel Castle Cape. Flares are checked to make sure they are not expired or damaged. Many times, because flares are only used for emergencies, owners forget to check the expiration date of their visual distress signals. All fishing vessel owners are encouraged to not only check the expiration date on their visual distress signals but also be familiar with how to operate them.USCG photo by Petty Officer Paul Roszkowski.
