PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (April 27, 2004)-- -- A grandmother, mother and her 3-year-old daughter wait to climb off a small boat and be repatriated here. Over 650 Haitians rode on small boats from U.S. Coast Guard Cutters to Killick Haitian coast guard base here April 27, after fleeing the country days earlier. Three heavily overloaded boats with few or no lifejackets carried the 686 migrants when the U.S. Coast Guard found and rescued them.
U.S. Coast Guard forces have been patrolling these waters since early March. They are here supporting Multinational Interim Force-Haiti to assist in stabilizing and securing the country.
