ABOARD CGC ACACIA (March 19, 2004)? Chief Boatswains Mate William Miller and Seaman Daniel Nietling secure a RADAR beacon onto a 26-foot, 12,000-pound lighted buoy aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Acacia. The beacon transmits a signal that is picked up on RADAR and shows the position and characteristic of the buoy it is placed on. Acacia was in the Chicago area to check and replace buoys for the 2004 Great Lakes shipping season. Acacia is a 180-foot sea going buoy tender built in 1944 home ported in Charlevoix, Mich.
