Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Mike Garcia, a marine science technician with the Port State Office here, examines the damaged containers still on board the cargo ship Med Taipai at berth 230 here. The ship's master reported that 24 containers were lost over the side and 19 containers on board were damaged when the ship encountered 35 foot seas that caused the containers to tear free of their steel constraints off the California coast on Wednesday, shortly after midnight.
