Two U.S. Navy P-3 Orion aircraft from Patrol Squadron (VP) 26 prepare for a search and rescue mission in the Philippines in support of humanitarian assistance efforts after Typhoon Haiyan. As of now, there are approximately 90 U.S. military personnel, majority from 3rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, in direct support of relief operations. The role of U.S. military forces during any foreign humanitarian assistance event is to rapidly respond with support to help mitigate human suffering and prevent further loss of life and mitigate great property damage. Super Typhoon Haiyan has impacted more than 4.2 million people across 36 provinces in the Philippines, according to the Philippine government's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
