Fireman David Mayfield, machinist's mate of Houston, practices a boiler light-off in the two main machinery room aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk. The ship's boilers reach temperatures of more than 500 degrees Fahrenheit to produce steam for the ship's propulsion and auxiliary power. Kitty Hawk is on its last spring deployment before she is replaced by the USS George Washington. Kitty Hawk operates from Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan.
