This illustration was created at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, June 11, 2026. The vector-based graphic was created for artwork display in the new II Marine Expeditionary Force Operations Center to honor Gen. Alfred M. Gray Jr., nicknamed 'Papa Bear,' the 29th Commandant of the United States Marine Corps (1987-1991). The poster details his heroic actions in May 1967 near the Vietnam DMZ outpost of Gio Linh, where then-Maj. Gray entered an uncleared minefield under enemy artillery fire to rescue trapped and wounded Marines, an act of valor for which he was awarded the Silver Star. The poster features a formal portrait photograph of Gen. Gray, archival field photographs, and displays his notable awards including the Silver Star, Legion of Merit with Combat 'V,' Bronze Star with Combat 'V' (four awards), and Purple Heart (two awards).(U.S. Marine Corps illustration by Lance Corporal Aegean DeVaughn-Wilson)
