This graphic illustration features U.S. Marines storming the beaches of Normandy, France, on D-Day, created at Marine Corps Base Quantico, June 3, 2025. 81 years ago, June 6, 1944, allied forces landed on the beaches, a pivotal moment in World War II against the axis power, marking the largest seaborn invasion in history. Among thousands of troops were a handful of U.S. Marines; they played a noteworthy but little-known role as gun crews aboard battleships and cruisers, and while ashore helped coordinate naval gunfire and the movement of troops and supplies off the beaches. This graphic illustration was created using Adobe Photoshop and serves as a remembrance of those who stormed the beaches. (U.S. Marine Corps graphic by Cpl. Casey Bonestroo)
