Sgt Lena Mae (Riggi) Basilone was a U.S. Marine Corps Women’s Reserve field cook and the wife of GySgt John Basilone, who was killed at Iwo Jima. She spent much of her life advocating for veterans’ causes, and christened a ship, USS John Basilone, which carries on her husband’s legacy (U.S. Navy Graphic by MC2 Zachary Bender).
