The Expert Field Medical Badge (EFMB) is a United States Army decoration
first created on June 18, 1965. This badge is the non-combat equivalent of
the Combat Medical Badge (CMB) and is awarded to medical personnel of the US
Military who successfully complete a set of qualification tests including
both written and performance portions.

Shurer was awarded the Medal of Honor on October 1, 2018, for his actions as a Green Beret medic with 3rd Special Forces Group during the Battle of Shok Valley in northeastern Afghanistan on April 6, 2008. Shurer was part of a team sent to capture or kill several high-value members of the Hezeb Islami al Gulbadin militant group. He passed away May 14, 2020, at the age of 41.
