USCGC Jeffrey Palazzo (WPC 1163) is named for Jeffrey Palazzo — a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, New York City Fire Department firefighter assigned to Staten Island's elite Rescue Squad 5, and U.S. Coast Guard Reserve Machinery Technician 1st Class who gave his life on Sept. 11, 2001, responding to the attacks on the World Trade Center.

One of the 343 FDNY members who made the supreme sacrifice that day, Palazzo served eight years on active duty in the Coast Guard before joining the FDNY, distinguishing himself in major rescue operations, including the 1989 sinking of the charter vessel Bronx Queen, in which 17 passengers were saved from frigid waters off the Rockaways. The cutter that bears his name carries the motto — NEVER FORGET — a collective vow of the American people to remember the victims of that day and honor the first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others.
