The Land Utilization mission area supports research on how agricultural lands — including rangelands, forests, and working lands — can be managed for productivity, sustainability, climate resilience, and ecosystem services. Research spans soil health, water management, conservation, grazing systems, carbon sequestration, and climate change adaptation. By integrating land‑focused science under one mission area, ARS enhances coordination across regions and equips land managers with tools and data that support long‑term stewardship of the nation’s natural resources.
