This collection of media captures the origin stories of the 106th Rescue Wing, based in Westhampton Beach, New York. The wing's legacy began on May 24, 1946, when the historic World War II Army Air Forces' 394th Bombardment Group was officially redesignated and allotted to the New York Air National Guard. After undergoing several organizational changes over the decades, the unit made history on June 14, 1975, when it was designated as the 106th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Group—becoming the Air National Guard’s very first rescue wing, known today as the 106th Rescue Wing.
