Seitaro Sakugawa, American Forces Network Okinawa Secretary, shares cultural tips as a part of a 50-part Okinawa culture series to help Status of Forces Agreement personnel build positive relationships with local communities during the month of January 2026. This culture tip focused on the proper use of chopstick holders, known as 'hashioki'. When pausing during a meal, chopsticks should be placed neatly on the holder, never left crossed on a bowl or stuck upright in rice. This practice reflects good table manners, and avoids gestures that have negative cultural connotations, particularly sticking chopsticks in rice, which is associated with funeral rites.
