LT Jack Rittichier was a Coast Guard pilot who volunteered volunteered for an exchange program with the Air Force and he was assigned to the Air Force's 37th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron [ARRS], based at Da Nang, in the Republic of Vietnam. In his own words, LT Rittichier describes some of the rescue missions he undertook in April and May of 1968. LT Rittichier and his three-man crew of HH-3E "Jolly Green 23" were killed in action the following month, soon after he made the recording. In 2002 a Joint Task Force-Full Accounting investigation team located the crash site inside Laos and recovered the remains of the crew. LT Rittichier was laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery on 6 October 2003.
