CAMP TAJI, Iraq – The New Year of 2009 is well under way, and January finds the 848th Engineer Company, "Cobras," conducting business in unusual places. The Sappers of the Multi-National Division – Baghdad unit from Douglas, Ga., continue their missions without interruption.

Although the mission of route clearance the Cobras conduct on a daily basis hasn't changed, the Soldiers maintain their duties around the clock and remain vigilant.

One aspect of life at Camp Taji means being away from the bustling metropolis of Victory Base Complex, home to the parent battalion and brigade of the 848th Engineer Company. When the Brigade commander pays a visit, it is a time for all the great accomplishments of the past year to be recognized. Such was the case when Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Talley, commander of the 926th Engineer Brigade, and native of South Bend, Ind., paid a special visit, Jan. 9, to the Sappers of 848th Engineer Company. Several Soldiers were awarded brigade coins from Talley. The tradition of military coining is one which, can be described as a Soldier receiving a medal token from their superiors which bears a unit's insignia or emblem that is given to challenge or enhance morale.
"I'm very proud of being coined by my brigade commander. It really is a great honor and I appreciate the recognition that he has displayed to me and my fellow Soldiers," said Spc. William Register, native of Vidalia, Ga.

"My Soldiers have done an outstanding job and to see how well they've executed their missions makes me proud," said Capt. Israel Brown, a native of Macon, Ga. "The many hours these Soldiers put in have really paid off. I know that I'm proud of them. Their morale is great and soon we'll be back to our families. We can leave knowing that we've done a good thing for the country of Iraq."

As the Cobra's tour in Iraq draws near its end, and the 926th Engineer Brigade readies for their redeployment, the accomplishments of the 848th Engineer Company are many. Talley's visit meant that the brigade commander was checking in on his Soldiers in Taji, as well as taking a moment to recognize some Soldiers that have gone the extra mile in ensuring the mission success of not only the company, but the overall 890th Engineer Battalion and 926th Engineer Brigade objectives of providing assured mobility in the Multi-National Division – Baghdad Area of Operations.
