To honor Lance Cpl. Thomas Edward Rivers Jr., who passed away, April 28, Gunnery Sgt. Carlos Pagan, the weapons platoon commander for Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 2, kneels in front of Rivers' memorial to pay his respects to his fallen brother. While 1st Squad was performing a mission preventing the enemy from firing at Patrol Base Sofla, in Helmand province, Rivers tripped an improvised explosive device and was killed as result of the blast. Rivers was born, March 19, 1988. He graduated from Briarwood Christian School in Hoover, Ala. He joined the Marine Corps on June 11, 2007 and became an infantryman.
