    II Marine Expeditionary Force

CHERRY POINT, N.C. - The Cherry Point duathlon began with a three-mile run up and down Roosevelt Boulevard, beginning at the Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point Hancock Pool Sept 15.

The more than 100 participants returned to Hancock Pool to board bikes for a 10-mile ride across the base and back.

Dropping their bikes, the racers left nothing in their metaphorical gas tanks, pushing through a second three-mile run to complete the 16-mile course to the finish.

“I think my shop would have given me a hard time if I didn’t win,” said first place winner, 1st Lt. Mark Hardman, a judge advocate at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. “Winning wasn’t easy; we were all suffering out there. I just kept the mindset of, ‘don’t get caught.’”

Hardman finished the race in 1 hour, 3 minutes and 49 seconds.

Retired Gunnery Sgt. Kevin Kelly said having events like the duathalon aboard Cherry Point is ideal because of its central location.

“Health is too much of a blessing to let go to waste,” said Kelly. “A lot of us old guys who retire from the military think, ‘well that’s it, I’m done,’ and they give up their active-duty bodies. But it’s not about coming out here and getting first, it’s about finishing.”

The Duathlon was a part of the Semper Fit Grand Prix ‘12 Series, Ulitmate Fitness Challenge.

The next event will be a half marathon at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Sept. 22. For more information, visit http://www.mccslejeune.com.
