SAN DIEGO – In partnership with industry and academia, Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command hosted a forum, Thursday, Oct. 20, to encourage employees to develop communication skills and enhance collaboration among a growing multi-generational workforce.

The primary objective of the training conference was to retain and sustain a diverse workforce by fostering reverse mentoring and improving working relationships among senior leadership.

For the first time in modern history, the American workforce encompasses four separate generations working side by side.

“The training conference is to serve as an invigorating forum for employees to learn how to further enhance their ability to listen, talk, communicate, connect and collaborate in today’s multi-generational workforce,” said Dr. Douglas Fenner, director, SPAWAR organizational development and training management.

Keynote speakers included Vice Adm. Kevin McCoy, commander, Naval Sea Systems Command; Rear Adm. Patrick Brady, commander, SPAWAR; Maj. Gen. Ronald Bailey, commanding general, 1st Marine Division; Navy Capt. Joseph Beel, commanding officer, SPAWAR Systems Center Pacific; and Navy Diversity Officer Monica Emerson.

The panel sessions were constructed to include representative from all generations in the workforce. The interactive sessions included mentoring, military diversity, developing talent within the workforce and the importance of fostering diversity.

“Diversity allows us to bring together the best talent to solve those technical and programmatic issues that are part of every acquisition process,” said Brady. “It drives the creativity we need to develop the systems we need today and into the future.”

As the Navy’s Information system dominance command, SPAWAR and industry partners have joined together to ensure all employees are engaged and learning how to constructively interact with one another – a tool vital to the organization’s success.
