Fun runs are a way to keep in shape while having a good time with friends and family.
The Village of Salado’s Chamber of Commerce decided to add a unique twist to the normal 5K while sharing relations with Soldiers just outside of their local community.
More than a dozen Troopers from the 3rd Cavalry Regiment participated in the Fourth Annual Midnight Madness 5K run held Aug. 1 in the Village of Salado.
The event featured a nighttime race with runners wearing glow-in-the-dark bracelets and necklaces while running a designated route on Thomas Arnold Road.
Officers from the Salado Police Department as well as first responders were also on hand to ensure safety and keep runners on course.
“It’s great for us to have our partner unit involved, because it keeps us connected to all the wonderful Soldiers on Fort Hood,” said Allyn Crain, co-chairman of the event and board member on the Salado Chamber of Commerce. “This is a wonderful community effort for our two organizations to take part in, since there is a big retired military population within the people who live in our city.”
Salado is the 3rd Cav. Regt’s adopted city and is also a part of Fort Hood’s Adopt-A-School Program. The program started in the mid-1990s and aligns local schools with units on post. Soldiers from the unit support their adopted school through training, mentorship and tutoring in leadership skills. A squadron from the 3rd Cav. Regt. is paired up with each of the schools in Salado’s district, elementary through high school.
“It’s extremely important that we maintain a very positive and enduring relationship with our sister city here in Salado,” said Lt. Col. Larry Croucher, commander of the 3rd Cav. Regt. ready rear detachment. “I’m amazed every time I come out here – the level of support that they offer not only to our regiment but to every Soldier that serves our country.”
The fun run is just one of numerous events in which Soldiers from the unit engage with members of the Salado community. The Village of Salado in partnership with the 3rd Cav. Regt. will hold a “Freedom Walk” Sept. 11 for the National Day of Service and Remembrance.
