The 2013 Official Washington Special Olympics Athlete-Torch Bearer, Michael U'Ren and Detective Shirrell Veitenheimer, of the Kennewick Police Department, light the "Flame of Hope" for the annual Washington Summer Special Olympics opening ceremony May 31 at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The "Flame of Hope" is carried by several law enforcement officers to the cauldron from across the state to JBLM annually. Traditionally, JBLM has been the primary competition site of the Washington Special Olympics Summer games for over 40 years. Representing the combined forces of Army and Air Force, I Corps Commanding General, Lt. Gen. Robert B. Brown attended the ceremony in recognition for the support offered to the games provided by troops each year.
