"It's good they came over to show their support for the troops," said Vaupel, a Vietnam veteran who retired in 1998 after 28 years of military service. In 2004 he volunteered for a retiree recall, to return to active duty. "I have been following the Yankees since the early 1950s," said Vaupel after having a baseball signed by Jeff Neslon, a former New York Yankees pitcher who retired during spring training in 2007.
