Biologists inject a passive integrated transponder (PIT) tag into shovelnose sturgeon using a syringe. Fish pit tags allow biologists to follow fish on the Mississippi River and learn what parts of the river they use. The St. Louis District Rivers Project Office and Missouri Department of Conservation place tags in fish periodically for monitoring purposes.
