Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tags allow biologists to follow fish on the Mississippi River and learn what parts of the river they use. The St. Louis District Rivers Project Office and Missouri Department of Conservation place tags in fish periodically for monitoring purposes. Biologists inject the tag into fish using a syringe, and then install antennas at points along the river that function like tollbooths picking up the fish as it swims past the receiver noting its movement.
