Members of the U.S. Marine Corps Band, known as "The President's Own," practice military movement and turning drills during a rehearsal at the Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C., Jan. 18, 2013. The President's Own was activated on July 11, 1798, by act of Congress and will be participating in the 57th Presidential Inauguration scheduled for Jan. 21, 2013, as it has in every presidential inauguration since being requested by President Thomas Jefferson in 1801. Military involvement in the presidential inauguration dates back to April 30, 1789, when members of the U.S. Army, local militia units and Revolutionary War veterans escorted George Washington to his first inauguration ceremony.
