Drums stand ready during a rehearsal of the U.S. Marine Corps Band, known as "The President's Own," at the Marine Corps Barracks, Washington, D.C., Jan. 18, 2013, in advance of the 57th Presidential Inaugural. The band received its name on New Year's Day, 1801, when President John Adams invited the band to perform at the Executive Mansion. Later that year, President Thomas Jefferson requested the band to play at his inauguration. Military involvement in the presidential inauguration dates back to April 30, 1789, when members of the U.S. Army, local militia units and Revolutionary War veterans escorted George Washington to his first inauguration ceremony.
