U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Jasper Gomes, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) explosive ordnance disposal augment, prepares to place dirt in a bucket to be screened during a recovery mission in Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Oct. 3, 2023. Dirt from the excavated units is placed into buckets and transferred to a screening stationed as U.S. personnel and Lao citizens look for aircraft parts, life support material and possible osseous material. Since 1985, the United States and Lao governments have worked closely together to find and recover unaccounted-for Americans. There are still 288 missing personnel in Laos from the Vietnam War.
