Gunnery Sgt. Eric J. Smith and Joy M. Aguilas participate in the closing ceremony of an engineering civic assistance project Oct. 16 as part of the bilateral Amphibious Landing Exercise (PHIBLEX) 2013. Marines and Sailors of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, together with their Armed Forces of the Philippines counterparts installed a new septic tank here at the Tagburos Elementary School. PHIBLEX is a bilateral training exercise hosted annually in the Republic of the Philippines to enhance interoperability and readiness of Armed Forces of the Philippines and U.S. Forces. The civil-military component of this exercise promotes engineer and medical operational readiness while providing services to local areas. Smith is the engineer staff non commissioned officer in charge of the site with Combat Logistics Battalion 31, 31st Marine Expeditionary Force and Aguilas is the principal of Tagburos Elementary School.
