Mr. William S. Harris, an 87-year-old, Montford Point Marine and his wife, are congratulated by U.S. Marines from Headquarters Battalion, Marine Corps Base Hawaii after receiving Congressional Gold Medal during a ceremony Aug. 27, 2012, at Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. Harris received the Congressional Gold Medal in recognition of his service during World War II. He, was unable to attend the June 27 Congressional Gold Medal Award ceremony at the U.S. Capitol therefore Marine units across the country are holding local ceremonies to ensure proper presentation and recognition of each Montford Point Marine. The Congressional Gold Medal is the highest civilian honor awarded as the utmost expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions.
