U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Carolyn Bird, Commanding Officer of Headquarters Battalion, Marine Corps Base Hawaii, presents the Congressional Gold Medal to Mr. William S. Harris, an 87-year-old, Montford Point Marine and resident of Molokai, Hawaii during an Aug. 27, 2012, ceremony held at Kaneohe Bay. Harris, was unable to attend the June 27 Congressional Gold Medal Award ceremony at the U.S. Capitol. The Congressional Gold Medal is the highest civilian honor awarded as the utmost expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions.
