Spc. Christian Mercado, right, helps John Elliott, a financier for First Citizens Bank in Fayetteville, N.C., don a parachute prior to a Joint Operational Access Demonstration, June 4. Distinguished visitors from Washington D.C. and the Fayetteville, N.C., area were partnered with "Airborne Buddies", Paratroopers assigned to 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, for events prior to the JOAD. Just before nightfall, heavy equipment and vehicles parachuted onto Sicily Drop Zone, closely followed by hundreds of 2BCT Paratroopers. Once on the ground, the troopers quickly assembled and secured the airfield in order to allow additional troops and equipment to safely land on the field landing strip for future missions. The DVs were in attendance for the exercise to observe the paratroopers’ high level of expertise and to gain an understanding of their ability to quickly deploy anywhere in the world for any mission on short notice. Mercado is an infantryman assigned to A Company, 2nd Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 2BCT. He is a native of Elizabeth, N.J.
