The commanding general of I Marine Expeditionary Force, Lt. Gen. Thomas D. Waldhauser and guest of honor, retired 1st Lt. Joseph R. Owen, enter the ballroom during the 235th Marine Corps birthday celebration in Pala, Calif., Nov. 19. Waldhauser thanked his Marines for their hard work and sacrifices over the years. "Contributions from I MEF Marines will forever be part of our Marine Corps and our nation's history," he said. "Your efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan and other places around the world will make this globe a far better place for us all." Waldhauser reminded guests that more than 12,000 Marines from I MEF are deployed around the world, primarily in Afghanistan, marking nine years of sustained combat operations. "Our thoughts and prayers are most certainly with our deployed Marines. We continue to make progress in Afghanistan, but as you also know, there's been some heavy and hard fighting in the past few weeks in Helmand province."
