On his first day firefighting, Pfc. Christopher Smif, an infantryman with the Company B, 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, uses a high-powered water hose to put out smoking embers Aug. 17. Smif, a member of fire team 10, is one of 550 Soldiers who deployed to Northern Washington to fight wildfires.
