Captain Derek Herrera, left, a special operations officer with 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion, is accompanied by his wife, Maura, after a retirement ceremony aboard Camp Pendleton, Calif., Nov. 21. Herrera medically retired from the Marine Corps after eight years of service. He was also awarded the Bronze Star Medal with combat V for heroism for his actions in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
