Captain Derek Herrera, right, a special operations officer with 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion, is presented the Bronze Star Medal by Lt. Col. John J. Lynch, center, commanding officer, 1st MSOB during a retirement ceremony aboard Camp Pendleton, Calif., Nov. 21. Herrera medically retired from the Marine Corps after eight years of service. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with combat V for heroism for his actions in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
